Work has been progressing on the redevelopment of Christchurch’s Burwood Hospital, and we’re glad to see that construction passed its halfway point earlier this year; putting it on track for its projected completion in 2016.

As one of the Greater Christchurch rebuild projects, the Canterbury District Health Board’s campus redevelopment plans have relocated a number of long-stay facilities, such as stroke and elderly care ward units, on to a site where accessibility to external courtyards and ranging views can be maximised.

Prioritising this notion of indoor/outdoor living, the architectural team’s design has given the building a perimeter of 1.5km in order to create as many courtyard and window spaces as possible. When you consider that the site’s total area is 30,000sqm, you have to wonder just how many folds and protrusions have been incorporated into the design to achieve this?

Find out more about the project.
