Congratulations to Christchurch Boys High School! Their new hall was awarded a New Zealand Institute of Architects Architecture award at the Canterbury branch’s award ceremony yesterday evening. The new hall was awarded in both the Education and Interior Architecture categories
Christchurch Boys' High School – New Hall – Education Winner at the 2018 Canterbury 2018 NZIA Local Branch Architecture Awards.
“The clever insertion of a contemporary building within the traditional school fabric has given Christchurch Boys’ High School a new heart. All 1300 boys can now be seated in a multiuse space. The inclusion of historical elements such as the World War Two Memorial Doors, headmasters’ portraits, wall panelling and the window above the stage help connect the new work to the existing building. Both Maori and European influences are expressed in the fabric and patterning of the hall, consistent with the design purpose of bringing people together.” Judges comment.
Christchurch Boys' High School – New Hall – Interior Architecture Winner at the 2018 Canterbury 2018 NZIA Local Branch Architecture Awards.
“In this project, the restraint and elegance of the selected palette highlights the deeply patterned blond timber. This is in turn reflects and contrasts with the traditional rich timber panelling in one of Christchurch’s most historic schools.” Judges comment.
This project will join other local branch awards, such as Wellington and Auckland, to enter the National round of the 2018 awards.
