Completed in 2015, this new six-storey office building overlooking the Avon River responds to a high demand for office accommodation in Christchurch.
Seeking to strike the appropriate balance between past and future, the building’s design demonstrates sensitivity to the collective ‘urban’ memory of Christchurch through the innovative use of recovered materials.
The design is characterised by linear atria located on both sides of the floor plate, creating spatial drama and assisting with infiltration of natural light and ventilation.
Exposed structure and services, high ceilings and a natural material palate further enhance the boutique character of the building and maximise adaptability of spaces.
Restrained planting in the atrium space will soften raw surfaces, aiding sun control, providing an outlook for office floors and reinforcing the idea of a ‘Garden City’. In addition, innovative low-damage design solutions including sprung rocking frames ensure that the building will not suffer major damage in the event of significant seismic activity.
