GridAKL is the largest co-working initiative in New Zealand. The fitout within the historic Mason Bros building was the second phase of ATEED’s vision for the GridAKL Innovation Precinct; it was completed shortly after the adjacent Innovation 5A.
Mason Bros, like Innovation 5A, is regarded as a co-working space of a ‘corporate quality’. Also operated by Generator, the premises offer tenants the same specialist, high quality integrations of acoustic design, IP protection and tech services as a tailored fitout for a large corporate, however on a membership basis
Mason Bros is scaled to provide amenity for start-up businesses and SMEs. ATEED and Generator’s intention that incubating the like-minded businesses of similar scales will encourage collaboration and increase networking opportunity.
Mason Bros is a repurposed character building. Its fitout concept, ‘Shipyard’, is a celebration of history - Harold and Percy Masons’ engineering and shipbuilding innovations. The fitout compliments the shell of the building, making subtle nautical references through colours, textures and form. Occasional accent colours reference Southern Spars’ branding, previous occupants of the building and leading designers in the marine industry.
“The vibrant environment promotes inner-business interactions while acknowledging the site’s industrial and nautical origins.” – New Zealand Institute of Architects, Awards Jury.
