Maidstone Intermediate School

Completion date

This project included a site wide masterplan, a new information centre & courtyard and the refurbishment of three existing classroom blocks. The masterplan for Maidstone Intermediate considered the school’s strategic vision and the entire site. Opportunities across the whole school grounds were maximised, engaging the external spaces as well as the built environment and surrounding neighbourhood.

A new information centre was conceived as being the centre for learning within the school, giving the possibility of extending learning out into the quadrangle and the wider community. The aim of this building and quadrangle was also to provide a welcoming high-tech heart for the school.

The award-winning Information centre was completed in 2012 and houses a library, computer technology classroom, multi-media room, a teachers resource room and support spaces for all of those functions. A new quadrangle provides an external learning environment and links the library with the surrounding refurbished classrooms.

The second stage included the refurbishment of three classroom blocks - a total of 11 classrooms. These classrooms have been regenerated to meet current MOE requirements and include flexible breakout and gathering spaces. They also incorporate new sustainable materials.. Colourful, comfortable furniture together with natural ventilation will enliven the existing building stock and make it suitable for the pupils. We used the Ministry of Education Modern Learning Environments DQSL standards for the design and assessed the buildings against the MOE weather tightness requirements for schools.
