Otahuhu Bus Train Interchange

Completion date

Ōtāhuhu was identified by Auckland Transport as an opportune location to provide a high quality transport interchange that offered direct connections between bus and rail networks, and better linking public transport between South and Central Auckland.

The priority for this project was to create a public facility that not only performed functionally, but enhanced and connected with the local environment and acknowledged the area’s heritage.

The new facility incorporates the existing train station, linking the rail platform with two new bus platforms and a terminal building.

Key design features include:

  • An elevated, over-rail concourse linking bus and train platform.
  • Multiple access options: stairs and lifts.
  • Passenger drop-off zone and staff parking.
  • Shared cycle path, cycle storage racks, and separated cycle crossing at adjacent intersection.
  • Allowance for the future City Rail Link line and platform.
  • Passive storm water design using rain gardens and treatment ponds.
  • Integrated cultural narratives in artworks, pavements, furnishings and architecture.

The station won an NZILA Award of Excellence / Te Karanga o te Tui in 2017.
