The VCC Reinstatement Project results from New Zealand Transport Agency acquiring church land to construct Auckland’s Victoria Park Road Tunnel. Jasmax acted as the Auckland based architect for dKO Architecture Melbourne to deliver the Church a relevant, contemporary multi-functional facility that both relates to Beaumont Street and provides an appropriate interface to the motorway. VCC is no longer a building that simply sits in a car park.

The existing 2500 seat auditorium has been extensively refurbished and wrapped in a new programme of function areas. A major front door provides strong visual connectivity along the ceremonial driveway, creating links to Victoria Park.

A new administrative building acts as a marker, fronting Beaumont Street, whilst a landscaped plaza and children’s play area form an external gathering space. Beneath this plaza, cut into the site, is a 347 space car park screened by “green wall” planting and a distinctive “saw tooth” façade.

The building edges have been designed to relate to the disparate boundaries and integrate with the public pathway to Jacob’s Ladder and shared areas looking beyond the site. The new auditorium frontage enhances the original building’s identity. Extensive terraces and open decking afford views to Westhaven Marina.

The angular forms created are repeated in the administration building. Cantilevered off a solid inscribed base, this reflects the original shoreline escarpment.

The completed reinstatement provides the Church with enhanced links to the city community, offering support and amenity within a highly accessible urban context.
